A.2.3.4: Inquiry and Literacy

Why is it important to grasp the concept of "knowing how"?

This article talks about the difference of "knowing that" and "knowing how". While reading this article I found that it is very important to grasp the concept of "knowing how". It is important because knowing how lets you do a number of things. For example, knowing how lets you come up with a question that is answerable. It also lets you find relevant information to answer your question. Once you find that relevant information, knowing how lets you decide how to use the information and how to organize it.

"Knowing that" only means that you know facts about things. It doesn't let you grasp the whole concept like "knowing how" does. Overall I think that it is far better to know how than to know that. If everyone knew how everyone would be a great researcher and we wouldn't have to worry about this topic. But the fact remains that some have never been taught this technique. Maybe some one needs to address the fact that more teachers need to stress this technique when they have their students do a research project.
